Pine-Pavetm Volumetric Mix Design
Software...
Pine Instrument Company has developed a software package that works in conjunction with
the Pine Instrument Company SGC and Microsoft ExcelŽ to aid the pavement engineer with
the calculations required for a volumetric mix design. The software, entitled Pine-Pavetm, enables the engineer to direct the specimen height data received
from the SGC into an IBM compatible computer. Pine-Pavetm
supports volumetric design methods by providing easily understood data input areas as well
as summarized output information. The graphs and reports are preformatted and are easily
previewed on screen or printed to a hard copy. Users unfamiliar with ExcelŽ will find the
software easy to understand. Experienced users will find its flexibility appealing.
Pine-Pavetm includes a user-friendly ExcelŽ template
to provide a framework for performing volumetric mix design calculations. Pine-Pavetm will automatically direct the height data received from the SGC
into the ExcelŽ spreadsheet. Project data as well as individual specimen data are entered
manually. ExcelŽ then performs the required calculations. The Ndesign may be calculated
from the traffic and climate information or manually selected. The template is logically
laid out to allow the engineer to enter the required data and extract the desired
information quickly and easily. Formatted reports are available to provide the information
needed for design decisions. The reports, as well as the input sheets, may be customized
to meet individual preferences.
Several summarized reports are available for analyzing results within Pine-Pavetm. The Summary Report tabulates volumetric information for each
blend and also estimates the %AC required for 4% air voids at Ndesign. The Densification
Report presents the preliminary compaction curves of different blends. This report
displays a table of the individual specimens and the average %Gmm for each blend. A graph
of the average %Gmm vs. number of gyrations is also plotted. The Varying Asphalt Content
Report graphs the curves for the %Gmm vs. gyration number, voids in mineral aggregate
(VMA), voids filled with asphalt (VFA), and air voids vs. %AC. This report is used to
determine the optimum asphalt content for the selected blend. A project header is printed
at the top of each report. The figures on the following pages are samples of the reports
available with the Pine-Pavetm reporting functions.
Pine-Pavetm also includes ExcelŽ templates for
aggregate gradation selection and analysis. These templates, one for each SUPERPAVE
nominal sieve size, will draw the FHWA 0.45 power gradation chart from the passing sieve
size percentages input by the technician. This set of templates is useful in determining
the suitability of a blend for further analysis. |
